The European Technical Assessment (ETA) is a documented evaluation of the performance of building products, related to their basic characteristics. This is the definition given by the "CE Certified Building Product Regulation" (CPR Regulation (EU) No 305/2011), which governs the marketing of building products in the European Economic Area. ETA provides manufacturers with an independent CE mark to mark their innovative non-standard building products.

If the construction product does not have or does not fully cover any unified European standards (EN), and the evaluation methods and standards are specified in the European Evaluation Document (EAD), an ETA can be issued.
Therefore, the European Assessment Document (EAD) forms the basis for European technology assessment. It includes methods for evaluating products and specifications for the system, used to evaluate and verify the performance certification system (AVCP system) to be applied. If the relevant products are not fully covered by the existing EAD, EOTA will develop new or adapted European assessment documents.
